Year 12 Film Studies - Current Lesson and Homework Information

Subject of Lesson:  Narrative, effect and meaning.

Areas covered:  Todorov's Classic Hollywood narrative, Syd Field's 3 Act structure.

Subject of Lesson:  Genre

Areas covered:  Genre conventions, how genre changes over time, sub-genres, hybrid genres.

Homework:  Take a 10 minute extract from a film of your choice and write an analysis of hoe it uses genre conventions.  Use all the terminology associated with genre that you have learnt.  Typed and printed - 700 words.

Areas covered:  Essay plan for Section B, Peer assessment, self-assessment of Section B.  Feedback on Section C and advice on how to improve exam response.

Areas covered:  Mark scheme and characteristics of an exemplar response.

Subject of Lesson:  Comparison between the two key texts.

Areas covered:  Exam areas identified, student presentations on detailed explorations into each area.

Homework:  Make a set of notes which summarise all the main points on each area - Themes and Issues, Messages and Values, Representation of Age, Representation of Masculinity,  Significance of Setting and Place,  Wider social context.  Make a table with each film next to each and a line ruled between them.  Use bullet points to show comparisons - similarities and differences.

Areas covered:  Messages and values in The Goonies, themes and narratives, genre and target audience. Key scene analysis.

Homework:  With detailed reference to the micro and macro elements write an analysis of the scene watched during class.
Make sure you speak about how the key messages, values and themes are displayed in it.  Also you should discuss representation in your analysis.

Areas covered:  How trailers are used, differences in British and American trailers, teaser trailers, other forms of publicity and marketing.

For each of your case study films, research the trailer online and watch it.
Write a brief analysis of each of the trailers and how they are similar and different.  What do they show?  What do they tell their audience?

Areas covered:  Todorov's theory of narrative - equilibrium, disequilibrium, agents of disequilibrium, new equilibrium.  Syd Field's 3 Act paradigm -  set-up, conflicts, resolution.  Complications, development, exposition, climax, resolution.

Homework:  Describe and explain the narrative structure of Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright 2004) with reference to Syd Field's 3 Act Paradigm and Todorov's theory of the classic Hollywood narrative.
